There is a girl. She's at her brother's football practice. Why is she there? She does not want to be. She wants to be at home, sleeping or reading. She pulls herself out of the car. It's cool outside. She likes it this way. The weather's nice. Nice for thinking. She jogs downhill to where her brother's team is. Her father and step-mother are setting up chairs. Only two. She had no place to sit except the ground. She walks over to the dirty 12 year olds wrestiling around on the field. However, she doesn't say anything. She never says a word to them. Only studies them. They look at her face, and then at her chest. They continue to wrestle, only harder this time, as if they actually want to hurt each other. It's clear to her they are trying to show off. But in her eyes, rolling in dirt and dead grass in a big orange uniform was only acting childish and stupid. She knows what they want, but refuses to give it to them. The wind blows her hair across her face, but she doesn't waste time fixing it. She likes her hair in her face. She smells the ocean, and the scent makes her smile. She turns away from the boys and strolls to the near-by playground. She doesn't bother letting anyone know where she's going. They don't care. She doesn't care, either. She walks to a swing, and sits down. Sitting on swings brings back childhood memories. She closes her eyes as bittersweet memories flood her mind. When she opens her eyes again, there's a boy there. He is sitting on the swing next to her, looking at her ever so often. He is the same height as her, but about one year younger. He has tan skin, similar to hers. Medium- length, curly black hair sits atop his head. His feet are bare, and his toes are in the sand. She looks down and realizes her feet are also bare and in the sand. She looks at him. He looks at her. He has a look in his eyes, not like the other immature 12 year olds. His eyes are dark brown. Very dark. With a sort of smokey grey ring around them. She can't stop looking at them. She won't feel safe if she looks away. There is security in his eyes. Mystery. Comfort. Love. She comes back to her senses. Love? she thinks. She scolds herself for being so foolish. They hadn't said a single word to each other. It couldn't have been love. She didn't even know his name. But she wanted to. O God she wanted to. She looks back at the swing. Empty. He's walking away. She stares as he starts toward the slide. He looks back at her. She lowers her head in embarassment. An hour passes and it is now six o clock. They constantly look at each other, but look away as soon as their eyes meet. She rises from the swing and strolls around the park. She stops her third time around. There is a stick lying at her feet. She looks over her shoulder, and manages to see the boy looking at her. She smiles. He smiles back, but turns away and blushes. She chuckles to herself, and walks over to the sand. With the boy's picture in her mind, she writes her name in the sand with the stick. She hears her father calling, and drops the stick to go see what he needs. It's almost time to leave. She returns to the place where she left the stick. Next to her name, she sees a plus sign, and then a name that could only belong to the boy. She looks at him. He looks at her. Niether of them turn away this time. Until she hears her father. It's time to leave. Quickly, she picks up the stick, and writes =♥ next to their names. She looks at him and smiles. He smiles back. She climbs into the car and can't stop smiling. She doesn't know if she'll ever see him again. She doesn't know a lot about him. But she knows his name. That was enough. At least, enough to know what was important. As the car pulls away from the small practice field, she sees a figure on top of the slide, waving. Smiling, she waves back.
